Master's Degrees in Business

One of the most popular degrees is currently the masters in business administration, or the MBA. Just like other masters degrees, the MBA can be costly and requires hard work. However, anyone who wants to advance in the business industry should consider earning a master's degree in business.

The Cost of an MBA

The basic two-year MBA program has the average tuition cost of more than $60,000, with some programs costing more than $75,000. Other costs, such as housing and books, will also increase the cost of earning this degree. If you’re planning to get an MBA, it’s a good idea to save as much money as possible before beginning the program.

Requirements

Though the minimum requirements to apply for an MBA program can vary from school to school, some requirements are standard for nearly all programs. These basic requirements include:
  • a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school (or an equivalent degree)
  • admissions test scores acquired from taking either the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Records Examination (GRE)
  • full-time work experience for a certain amount of years (about two years for full-time programs and longer for executive programs).

Once these pre-requisites are fulfilled, you then have to go through the application process, which involves:

  • acquiring and submitting letters of recommendations
  • completing interviews (Not all schools interview applicants to their master's business programs but some do.)
  • creating a work resume
  • gathering official transcripts
  • writing essays.

MBA Degree Concentrations

A master's in business degree can be specialized to focus on specific disciplines and skills. While students first entering MBA programs will likely start off with the same courses, as they progress in their studies, they will take different courses based on their individual concentrations they choose. Some of these concentrations include (but are not limited to):

Career Opportunities for MBAs

Earning an MBA can open up many career opportunities that would not otherwise be available. Some of these opportunities include senior and executive management positions. Additionally, an MBA can also add an extra edge to a person’s resume when competing for a highly sought after position in a company. In fact, some reputable companies and industry leaders may not even consider hiring anyone who has less than an MBA.

Another advantage of earning an MBA is that it can relate to a variety of industries. In addition to the chosen concentration, MBA programs educate students in general business practices and management, both of which are applicable in a variety of industries.

Earning your MBA Online

In the booming age of the Internet, many (especially adults who have been out of school for a while) are choosing to enroll in and complete online MBA programs. Overall, degrees from online MBA programs are typically equivalent to those from traditional MBA programs, depending on the school’s accreditation and reputation.

Although online MBA programs may have the convenience of working at home, the coursework can be just as difficult as an in-class MBA program. In most cases, online programs require an individual to dedicate much of her time to independent study.

The overall price range for an online MBA program can vary from much less than a typical MBA program ($10,000) to equivalent or more than a traditional MBA program (up to $100,000). In either case, an online MBA can open up as many opportunities as a regular MBA.
